“Hi, my name is Barry and I began fostering in 2014 with my wife Julie. In 2016 we took a 1-year break for the adoption of our son who is now 9 years old. Before I became a full-time foster carer, I worked for Go North East as a bus driver. As well as being a carer, Julie also works as a health care assistant in our local hospital in Newcastle doing 2 shifts per week.
Julie and I had always talked about fostering for a while before actually contacting the agency, we always thought we’d done a good job parenting our own children and still had plenty to offer by providing other children a safe, loving and fun home. We have 3 boys with us now, who are all hugely different in their own ways!
Our 15-year-old has been with us for 14 months now, he loves to get involved with the horses we have here at home. Because of his dedication towards his hobby, we made the decision to get him his own horse in April (which was described as “a dream come true”)
Next is our 12-year-old who has been with us for 5 months. His main interests are playing on his PS4 and on his mobile phone.
Then our 4-year-old has been with us for 4 months. He has an amazing bubbly personality. He loves being outdoors playing with our 9-year-old son. He is a busy little boy that loves life to the full.
Fostering is very important to us; we strive to make a difference to every child in our care. We enjoy seeing a smile on all their faces when we answer a little dream they could have or hearing the true laughter come out when you play with them. It can always be a struggle for us when the time comes if any child has to leave us, but we know this has to happen, so we always try to keep a good relationship with families where possible so the journey can continue after they leave our home. We are very lucky that 2 children have now moved on are very much still part of our family and visit us regularly.
My advice to anyone thinking about fostering would be it’s a 24/7 job but well worth every minute once you see that smile that wasn’t always there before or seeing the impact you can create on a child’s life. It is rewarding, to say the least. Foster Care Solutions is a fantastic agency to be part of, we are like one big family. Both carers and staff are always at hand 24/7 with help & advice.” – Barry, Foster Carer
